Our mission –
Vets Help Vets was incorporated as a not for profit 501 c 3 in 2007. A group of Vietnam vets were looking for ways to help our returning vets who had been injured while serving their country.
Our mission is to provide minor home renovations to help our disabled vets reintegrate back into society. We do this by providing both the material and volunteers to construct wheelchair ramps, enlarge interior and exterior doors, and modify kitchens and bathrooms. Our service delivery area is the north metro Atlanta area.
All work is done in compliance with Federal ADA guidelines and local building codes. We have a licensed electrician who is a disabled Vietnam vet and our plumber is a vet of the first Gulf war. They both drive down from Dawson County to support this project. We pay for the materials and they volunteer their time and expertise.
No member of Vets Help Vets or any volunteer receives any compensation.
We believe that “Never again should a generation of veterans forget another”.
Last spring, several of us had the opportunity to tour Shepherd Center and observe the wonderful program they were using to help seriously injured vets recover to their full potential. They explained during a follow up lunch they were hoping to renovate an older apartment complex near the center for use by vets and their families after their inpatient care was complete. This facility will allow vets and their families a chance to begin the process of living independently.
After the meeting, we inquired about the nature of the renovations required and determined their needs fit perfectly with our mission.
Since that meeting, we have worked with the Shepherd Center to develop a renovation strategy. Cynthia Aiken Interiors volunteered their services to select the appropriate colors to make Shepherd Place more like a home and less like an apartment. We designed and installed custom kitchen cabinets designed to accommodate those living in a wheelchair. Amanda Dame helped us select custom wood blinds for the windows.
We have completed one apartment and are in the process of renovating three more apartments at Shepherd Place and would like to invite you to consider working with us on this project. We are currently removing existing ceiling tiles from a suspended ceiling and replacing the tiles. Shortly, we will begin painting each unit.
